Robabilistic Shoreline Change Modeling

چکیده
dology is developed in which a simple deterministic shoreline change model is in a probabilistic manner as one component of a quantitative coastal change assessment. The main drivers of decadal-scale shoreline change, wave climate ment supply, are varied within a range of realistic scenarios to develop over 200 e change model simulations. Through numerous SWAN wave simulations, a table is developed to transform deep water wave conditions to the relatively water offshore boundary of the shoreline change model. By applying the e change model in a Monte Carlo sense, predicted probability density functions eline position can be calculated at any location in the model domain. Approaches se of these probabilistic shoreline change modeling results by coastal managers cision making are discussed.

Modeling storms improves estimates of long-term shoreline change
[1] Large storms make it difficult to extract the long-term trend of erosion or accretion from shoreline position data. Here we make storms part of the shoreline change model by means of a storm function. The data determine storm amplitudes and the rate at which the shoreline recovers from storms. Historical shoreline data are temporally sparse, and inclusion of all storms in one model over-fit...
متن کاملShoreline Modeling and Erosion Prediction
This paper presents a shoreline-erosion prediction model of Lake Erie that can forecast shoreline changes from annual to 10-year increments. It was developed by using historical bluffline data of years 1973, 1990, 1994, and 2000 at Lake Erie provided by NOAA and local government agencies. The relationships among these historical shorelines are analyzed using a least-squares method. Erosion rate...
متن کاملProgress in coupling models of human and coastal landscape change
4 Humans are increasingly altering the Earth’s surface, and affecting processes that shape and 5 reshape landscapes. In many cases, humans are reacting to landscape-change processes that 6 represent natural hazards. Thus, the landscape is reacting to humans who are reacting to the 7 landscape. When the timescales for landscape change are comparable to those of human 8 dynamics, human and ‘natur...
متن کاملTransient and persistent shoreline change from a storm
[1] There is disagreement as to whether shoreline position eventually recovers from large storms. In an earlier paper we showed that statistical modeling of historical shoreline data was improved by including large storms in the model via a transient storm function. Here we show that, at shorter timescales of months to years, modeling of the shoreline at Assateague Island, MD is improved by a s...
متن کاملModelling of Sediment Transport in Beris Fishery Port
In this paper, the large amount of sedimentation and the resultant shoreline advancements at the breakwaters of Beris Fishery Port are studied. A series of numerical modeling of waves, sediment transport, and shoreline changes were conducted to predict the complicated equilibrium shoreline. The outputs show that the nearshore directions of wave components are not perpendicular to the coast whic...
